If you have ever searched “itchy scalp”, “flakes that won’t go away”, “oily but dry scalp”, “tight scalp after washing” or “sensitive scalp”, you have probably noticed the same thing we did: haircare advice is loud, trends change weekly, and “YouTube University” is often where people are told to get their hair “facts”. Meanwhile, the scalp is treated like an afterthought.
Dakmatter exists because none of that made sense to us. Hair quality begins in the scalp, and biology does not change like seasonal trends. This is scalp care — not haircare trends.
We are chemists, and founders - we built Dakmatter from one conviction: the scalp is not a styling surface. It is a living ecosystem. Flakes, oiliness, dryness and itch are not random “problems”. They are biological feedback loops linked to scalp barrier stability, hydration balance, sebum (oils) behaviour, and microbial equilibrium in the scalp microbiome.

Why “Haircare Trends” Often Fail the Scalp
For consumers today, it has never been harder to separate real science from marketing. Haircare is full of bold claims and “miracle ingredients”. Some are grounded in research. Many are not. A white label brand puts less than 5% into scientific reseach but more than 85% into marketing.
Between greenwashing, influencer advice and oversimplified promises, it can be difficult to know what is actually true and effective and what simply sounds convincing.
That is why we believe the best way to show what makes Dakmatter different is to explain the thinking science and philosphy behind our formulas: why they exist, and what we built to make them work differently. Let's start with the WHY
What Is the Scalp Actually Trying to Tell Us?
Most haircare products are designed to improve how hair looks: shine, volume, texture, and frizz control. But again, a bit backwards, as the biology that determines hair quality begins in the scalp.
The scalp is living skin tissue containing hair follicles, sebaceous glands, immune cells and a complex microbiome of bacteria and yeasts. When this ecosystem becomes unstable, signals appear quickly — flakes, itch, irritation, excess oil, dryness, sometimes even odour.
Many conventional solutions attempt to suppress these signals using aggressive detergents, fragrance systems or strong antifungal agents. Others address symptoms without addressing root causes. This can bring short-term relief, but also rebound patterns and further destabilisation of the scalp barrier and microbiome.
When developing Dakmatter, we didn’t begin with what was trending in haircare. We began with scalp data - what people were actually experiencing on their scalps - and the patterns that kept repeating: flakes, oiliness, dryness and itch, things that look like different problems, but are often different outcomes of the same few systems in the scalp losing their normal stability. This is NOT a sign of malfunctioning! It is the scalp sending a distress SOS signal - a code to decipher, not a problem to cover up.
This became the formulation logic of Dakmatter. By studying irritation signalling, microbial balance and hydration dynamics, we design formulas to stabilise the scalp environment at its source - rather than creating the usual masking of symptoms or never-lasting quick fixes.
